The Trip

Time to tell you about this trip. The detail. The mega-moon in all its glory. I’ve dangled the carrot long enough and now here it is.

When Ryan and I first flirted with the idea of a big trip, it was all speculative and a conversation we just enjoyed exploring – a bit like “If you won the lottery, what would you spend the winnings on?”

Between the two of us we've already covered quite a bit of ground – myself through one big gap year trip before University (Thailand, Laos, Vietnam, Cambodia, Singapore, Australia, New Zealand and Fiji) and Mr A through 3 separate trips during uni summer holidays (Thailand, Vietnam, Cambodia, Australia, Hawaii, China, Hong Kong, Macau and inter-railing around Europe ) – so we had fun working out which part of the world we wanted to discover, both of us quite happy to revisit places for the other’s benefit but also wanting to tick new places off the list. South America was the clear winner; a common denominator in both our wishlists and with such an impressive reputation among our backpacking peers, it was a bit of a no-brainer!

So here is it, the official itinerary! Have you been to any of these places? Please do send recommendations for us to try out along the way!

North America...
Las Vegas > Yosemite National Park > San Francisco > Carmel > Santa Barbara > Santa Monica.

This is my first time to these parts of America. I've been privy to a few days in LA, family holidays in Florida and I'm a huge fan of the New York city break but super excited to see the complete paradoxes of desert and ocean road. Mr A has been to Vegas and driven the west coast before but is keen to revisit again - luckily for me!

South America…
Ecuador
Quito > Alausi > Guayaquil

Peru
Flying into Lima, we’ll be picking up a 16 day tour from 3rd September through G Adventures called the Andean Discovery. Check out the route here.

Ending in...Bolivia
La Paz – from here we freestyle it again to >  Sucre > Potosi > Salad se Uyuni

Chile
San Pedro de Atacama > Calama > Santiago

Argentina
Mendoza > Buenos Aires > Peurto Iguazu

Brazil
Florianopolis > Sao Paulo > Paraty > Ilha Grande > Rio de Janeiro

Absolutely no idea what to expect here but so excited for the huge diversity. From salt flats to Machu Picchu and Argentinian steak to Chilean Malbec I think I'm going to like this part!

Central America...

Costa Rica
Time for us to sit back and let someone else arrange things for a while with another G Adventure’s tour starting in San Jose. Read about the 16 day tour here.

Belize
Fly into Belize City > Caye Caulker > San Pedro

Mexico
Playa de Carmen  > Tulum (to see Chichen Itza) > Cancun

Cuba
Havana > Santa Clara > Trinidad > Santiago de Cuba > Baracoa > Varadero

Cuba has been top of my list since I ticked off Bali in 2013 so I've been desperate to go! We shoe-horned our route to accommodate this country and have ended up with three weeks there! Plus before that we’ll be getting warmer as we head north from Brazil including a week off radar at Caye Caulker – check out the Blue Hole for a spot of scuba or snorkeling.

So I'm sure you will agree that's quite enough to keep us occupied. Time now to get some sleep before our 4am start!
